Borghetto is part of the District of Valeggio sul Mincio and takes pride in its centuries long history. This place has been the borderline and conflict zone between Mantua and the Scaligeri from Verona in the Middle Ages, the land of military manoeuvres at the time of Giangaleazzo Visconti; territory that belonged for centuries to the Serenissima Republic of Venice until the arrival of Napoleon. Borghetto is dominated by the presence of the Castle of the family Della Scala on top of the hill in the background and a magnificent bridge, which was built in the 14th Century along the river Mincio by Giangaleazzo Visconti and from which it’s possible to admire the beauty of Borghetto.
A little walk will give us the opportunity to discover the history of this hamlet from Roman Times to the present day; from the time of the Curtis Regia, when the river was used as a passage, as fishers’ and farmers’ hamlet, stronghold of the Scaligeri from Verona, to become later a center for grinding cereals, as far as the romantic attraction it represents nowadays. Stories, tales, traditions and culture will accompany our itinerary.
Valeggio, close to Borghetto , with its Cathedral devoted to Saint Peter and a 17th Century Villa that belonged to the Maffei family is famous nowadays because of the presence of the Park Garden Sigurtà, one of the biggest private gardens in the world and awarded the best park of Italy in 2013.
After Borghetto, we also strongly suggest to enjoy a longer stay in order to visit the Sigurtà Park. The last touch of your journey could be a lunch or dinner at one of the good restaurants or pasta factories famous for the “nodo d’amore” , the typical tortellino from Valeggio sul Mincio.
