VERONA AT THE TIME OF VENETIAN RULE

140 €

Verona at the time of Venetian rule

Describing Verona during the Venetian rule means talking about a two-faced city: a focal point for painters, especially for the art of fresco, and a model for modern military architecture, with its impressive city walls and fortifications.

This tour can start with a bus tour in order to have a look at the venetian city walls, with the three imposing Reinassance gates: Porta Nuova, Porta Palio and Porta San Zeno.
The walking tour can start right across the medieval bridge of Castelvecchio, a symbolic place and memory of
the year 1405, when Verona became part of the Venetian Republic; walking along Corso Cavour you will admire some of the most impressive examples of Renaissance and baroque architecture in town: Palazzo Canossa and Bevilacqua, Palazzo Carlotti, and many others.

Once we reach Piazza Erbe we could admire the colorful and lively market and the gorgeous Renaissance and baroque buildings surrounding it, as Palazzo Maffei. Verona in the venetian times was called ‘urbs picta’, the painted city and here you will understand why: many façades still are conspicuous thanks to their frescoes depicting religious or mythological scenes. The Mazzanti’s house is surely the best example of the wealth spent by the various families for this lavish decoration. Next to it, another square: Piazza dei Signori, political and administrative center of the city. Many buildings of different ages are to be seen and one in particular: the Loggia del Consiglio, built at the end of the 15th century, a perfect example of Renaissance architecture. Finally we head towards Piazza Brà, a square born under the rule of Venice, and nowadays the biggest square of Verona.

For a longer visit, we suggest to add an exploration to the Duomo or Castelvecchio, two authentic Renaissance art galleries of Verona.
